Jainism

Indian civilisation has produced many philosophies and religions. Among them is Jainism, one of the oldest religion in the world. Though historians have made various speculations about its origins, the origin of Jainism remains untraceable. Jains believe it to be an eternal religion.

JAINISM is a way of thinking and living based on logic and science. The name Jainism comes from Jina, meaning ‘victor’ over the self. Jinas have achieved liberation from karmic bondage and attained the true characteristics of the soul such as infinite faith, infinite knowledge, perfect conduct, infinite bliss and eternity by their own efforts. They are called tirthankaras, those who lead us towards the path of the eternal life of perfection. When Jains say that Jainism is a religion preached by the Jinas, they mean Jainism expresses the eternal truths of life and spirituality taught by pure souls, who are victors of themselves, with perfect knowledge and understanding.

Jainism believes the universe to be eternal, its constituents such as living and non-livings things may change form, but they are basically eternal. Time rotates in a cycle, like a wheel moving clockwise, descending and ascending. In each half of the time cycle (aeon), descending and ascending, twenty-four tirthankaras revive Jainism. The first tirthankara in this aeon was Risabhdeva and the twenty-fourth (and last) was Vardhamana Mahavira who lived from 599 to 527 BC.

Its teachings are right and appropriate for any age or era. Even in modern age where reasoning and science are the yard sticks, the Jain teachings look relevant to the thinking of the modern world which believes in individual freedom, socialism, and equality of all the souls irrespective of caste, colour, race or sex. It wishes well of all living beings and malice to none, but love and fraternity to all.It explains fully the philosophy of the soul and matter, the importance of the human life and shows the perfect code of useful and healthy living. We have inherited this fine philosophy through the teachings of LORD MAHAVIR and it is upto us to keep this heritage alive.

Jain History

Mahavira
Mahavira, who was thirty years older than Buddha, revived and expounded the religious, philosophical and ethical teachings of previous tirthankaras. Over a period of nearly a century after Mahavira’s liberation, Jainism produced a series of omniscients. These were followed in succession, for more than two centuries, by scriptural omniscients and later by prominent ascetic scholars. These knowledgeable ascetics evolved Jainism into a complete religious system, with its own philosophy, ethics, rituals and mythology. They produced 45 scriptures, known as agams, and vast sacred literature, covering all aspects of human life and the situation of other living beings in the universe.

Jain Society

Mahavira was very practical in his approach. He divided society into male ascetics and female ascetics, who can follow his teachings rigorously, and laymen and laywomen who can pursue the path of his teachings to the best of their abilities in the light of their worldly duties. Jainism does not demand unquestioning faith from its followers, but encourages understanding before acceptance. The fourfold order developed into a highly organised society of monastic orders and laypeople. Jains have created beautiful temples, upashrayas (places of meditation), and preserved most of their sacred literature. They have established institutions of education, social welfare and animal welfare. ‘Live and help to live’ is their motto and their way of life is based on the teachings of Mahavira.

Jainism believes in the equality of all souls and reverence for life in its totality. It accords significance to the minutest living organisms. Animal welfare, vegetarianism and care of the environment are very much at the heart of Jain beliefs. Relative pluralism has made Jains tolerant towards other faiths. Jainism does not believe in active conversion, but accepts a person, irrespective of caste, creed, colour or gender, as Jain, who follows the Jain way of life.

We believe in re-birth till the soul has karmic bondage, but once soul is liberated by shedding all karma, there is no rebirth. Such liberated souls live in total bliss in Siddhasila at the tope of occupied Universe.

There are about 30,000 Jains in the Europe, 50,000 in USA, and 12 million in the whole world (As many Jains are included as Hindus, Indian census figures are unreliable). Most of them live in India. There are more than 10,000 Jain monks and nuns in India, but as they have taken the complete vow of non-violence and travel on feet.

Jain Festivals

Daslasksana Parva

This festival is celebrated by both Svetambara as well as Digambara Jainas for eight to ten days during the monsoon season. This is a festival of self-discipline through fasting and other ascetic practices. Men, women and children as well as monks and nuns undertake fasts with varying strictness. While some observe fast on all the eight days, many fast on alternate days but all fast on the last day. During Paryusana, there are regular sermons and ceremonies in the temples. In Digambara temples, chapters from Tattvartha Sulfa, the Bible of the Jainas, and in Svetambara temple those from Kalpasutra are read out to the audience. On the last day, members of the community greet each other and ask forgiveness for any pain that might have been caused knowingly or unknowingly by any of their actions during the past year. Those members of the community who undertake complete fast during the festival days are taken to the temple in a procession on the last day after which they break the fast. The Jainas are special1y zealous during Paryusana to prevent any animal life being taken. Often jaina foundations pay money to close down slaughter houses to save animal life during the festival days.

Akshyatritya

This festival is observed in April. On this day sugarcane juice is ritually offered to those who have observed various types of fasts through out the year. According to jaina literature, on this day Rsabhanatha, the first tirthankara, received in accordance with the religious ritual in the form of sugar-cane juice for the first time after his continuous fast of six months from the hands of the mythical Prince Sreyamskumar. The ladies who participate in the ritual are given garlands and are brought to the temple in a small hell procession. The relatives of the participants go to a nearby shop of sugarcane crusher, wash the press with boiled water and collect the juice in earthen pots. They bring the juice to the temple and offer to the participants 108 small cups full of juice. After observing this ritual the participants normally take a vow that for the rest of their lives they will not drink unboiled water.

Siddhachakra or Navedevata Puja

Siddhacakra or Navadevata diagram (the circle of the Siddha, the omniscient one) consists of a stylised lotus with eight petals. In the centre Id in four petals of the lotus are depictions of the five highest Beings of the Jainas, namely Arhat, the enlightened one, Siddha, the liberated one, Acharya, the head monk, Upadhyaya, the teacher monk, and Sadhu, the monk. In the four petals the Svetambaras inscribe the principles: right knowledge. right faith, right conduct and right penance; whereas Digambaras depict dhar-
cakra, jina image, jina temple and scriptures. Apart from worshipping this diagram in the temple or in a smaller way in the house, there is elaborate worship of the same in which many people take part and the ritual lasts for nine days. In this worship, the diagram is made on the floor from grains of various colours suitable for the great Beings. Part of the worship is a narration of the story of King Sripala who is believed to have gained miraculous benefits due to the worship of this yantra. Generally, the diagram is worshipped on fulfilment of a certain vow or for avoiding ill luck and furthering prosperity. Such a puja is generally announced by the family after the events of birth, marriage, death etc.

Kartik Purnima

By the full moon day of Kartik (around November), Karyik Purnima, the monks and nuns
,tart to wander further after having stayed at one place for the rainy period. On this day the
monks are taken out of the town in a procession and a few people even accompany the monks to the next town or village. The community starts eating green vegetables which is not done during the rainy season. On this day many people start on a pilgrimage to Palitana. In many temples a stone panel or cloth painting of Palitana is displayed and those who cannot undertake the pilgrimage to Palitana go and worship the panel in a temple.

Diwali

Along with Hindus the Jains also celebrate the festival of Divali. For the Jainas, Divali is an important festival, because on this day Mahavira is supposed to have attained nirvana. In many temples of Digambara sect sweet balls are offered. Divali is also important for Jainas as it marks le beginning of their new year. All business accounts of the previous year are settled and new acount books are started. On this day businessmen go to shops and buy new account books and worship them along with the image of Lakshmi as well as currency notes, jewellery, etc. at a special ceremony.

Mahavir Jayanti

This festival, connected with the great auspicious event of the birth of Lord Mahavira is celebrated with great pomp and enthusiasm by all Jainas. Processions are taken out, meetings are held and the message of Mahavira is explained to all.

Vegetarianism

There are various reasons that justify the stand in favor of vegetarianism and a few of them are mentioned below:-

1. Ahimsa, the law of no injury, is the Jain’s first duty in fulfilling religious obligations and follow the basic rule of Jainism “Ahimsa Permo Dharma” (Non-Violence is the prime religion) subsequently leading to co-existence i.e. “Live and let live”. The non-vegetarian diet is available after injury, pain and death only.

2. The Karmic Consequences Reason:- All of our actions, including our choice of food, have Karmic consequences. By involving oneself in the cycle of inflicting injury, pain and death, directly , indirectly or even to accord consent by eating other creatures, one must in the future experience in an equal measure the suffering caused.

3. The Spiritual Reason:- Whatever we eat, it affects our consciousness, emotions and experiential patterns. If one wants to live in higher consciousness, in peace and happiness and love for all creatures, then he cannot eat meat, fish, shellfish, fowl or eggs. He should take “Satvik ” means exclusively pure vegetarian diet By taking the non-Vegetarian or ” Tamsik ” food one introduces into the body and mind anger, jealousy, anxiety, suspicion and a terrible fear of death, all of which are locked into the the flesh of the butchered creatures. For these reasons, vegetarians live in higher consciousness and meat-eaters abide in lower consciousness.

4. The Health Reason:- It is known fact and proved by medical science that a vegetarian diet is easier to digest, provides a wider ranger of nutrients.. Vegetarians are less susceptible to all the major diseases that afflict contemporary humanity, and thus live longer, healthier, more productive lives. They have fewer physical complaints, less frequent visits to the doctor and fewer dental problems. Their immune system is stronger, their bodies are purer and more refined.

5. The Ecological Reason:- As everyone well knows, we need our forests. However, our forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. Consequently the escalating loss of species, destruction of ancient rainforests to create pasture lands for live stock, loss of top soils and the consequent increase of water impurities and air pollution have all been traced to the single fact of meat in the human diet. It takes between 100,000 liters of water to produce a single kg of beef, and where as the same amount of water can produce 100 kg or more of grains. No decision that we can make as individuals or as a race can have such a dramatic effect on the improvement of our planetary ecology as the decision not to eat meat apart from growing and use more and more agricultural products.

Great Man View On Jainism

“In conclusion let me assert my conviction that Jainism is an original system, quite distinct and independent from all others; and that therefore it is of great importance for the study of philosophical thoughts and religious life in ancient India.”
Dr. Herman Jacobi

“What would be the condition of the Indian Sanskrit literature if the contribution of the Jains were removed? The more I study Jain literature the more happy and wonder struck I am.”
Dr. Hertel, Germany

“Jainism is of a very high order. Its important teachings are based upon science. The more the scientific knowledge advances the more that Jain teachings will be proven.”
L. P. Tessetori, Italy

“I adore so greatly the principles of the Jain religion, that I would like to be reborn in a Jain community.”
George Bernard Shaw

“Lofty ideas and high ascetic practices are found in Jainism. It is impossible to know the beginning of Jainism.”
Major General Forlong

“The Jains have written great masterpieces only for the benefit of the world.”
Dr. Hertel, Germany

“I say with conviction that the doctrine for which the name of Lord Mahavira is glorified nowadays is the doctrine of Ahimsa. If anyone has practiced to the fullest extent and has propagated most the doctrine of Ahimsa, it was Lord Mahavira.”
Mahatma Gandhi

“Mahavira proclaimed in India that religion is a reality and not a mere social convention. It is really true that salvation can not be had by merely observing external ceremonies. Religion cannot make any difference between man and man.”
Dr. Rabindranath Tagore

“We learn from scriptures (Sashtras) and commentaries that Jainism is existing from beginningless time. This fact is indisputable and free from difference of opinion. There is much historical evidence on this point.”
Lokamanya Bala Gangadhar Tilak

“Jainism has contributed to the world the sublime doctrine of Ahimsa. No other religion has emphasized the importance of Ahimsa and carried its practice to the extent that Jainism has done. Jainism deserves to become the universal religion because of its Ahimsa doctrine.”
Justice Ranglekar, Bombay High Court

“The Jain Sadhu leads a life which is praised by all. He practices the vratas and rites strictly and shows to the world the way one has to go in order to realize the atma (soul). Even the life of a Jain householder is so faultless that India should be proud of him.”
Dr. Satischandra Vidhya Bhushan

“The right of welcoming the delegates of the universal peace organization belongs to the Jains only. Because Ahimsa alone contributes to the establishment of universal peace. Tirthankaras, the propounders of Jainism, preached to the world the Ahimsa doctrine. Therefore, who else except the followers of Bhagavan Parsvanath and Mahavira can preach universal peace?”
Dr. Radha Vinodpal

“There is nothing wonderful in my saying that Jainism was in existence long before the Vedas were composed.”
Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Vice President, India

“Truly speaking, Jainism is an independent and original religion, for it is neither Hinduism nor Vedic religion, but of course it is an aspect of Indian life, culture, and philosophy.”
Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, Prime Minister, India

“I am not Rama. I have no desire for material things. Like Jains I want to establish peace within myself.”
Yoga Vasishta, Chapter 15, Sloka 8 the saying of Rama

Jaimaala

Bhav van men jee bhar ghoom chukaa, Kan kan ko jee bhar bhar dekha.
Mrig sam mrig trishna ke peechhe, Mujhko na mily such ki rekha.

Jhunthe jag ke sapne saare, Jhunthee mun ki sab aashayen.
Tan jivan yaovan asthir hai, Kshan bhangur pal men murjhayen.

Samrat mahabal senani, Ous kshan ko ial sakega kyaa.
Asharan mrit kaaya men harshit, Nij jivan dal sakega kyaa.

Sansar mahaa dukh saagar ke, Prabhu dukhmay such aabhason men.
Mujhko na milaa such kshanbhar bhi, Kanchan kaamini praasadon men.

Mein ekaki ekatva liye, Ekatva liye sab hi aate.
Tan dhan ko saathi samjha thaa, Par ye bhi chhod chale jaate.

Mere na huye ye mein inse, Ati bhinna akhand niraala hoon.
Nij men par se anyatva liye, Nij samras peene waala hoon.

Jiske shringaaron men meraa, Yah mahanga jivan ghul jaata.

Hum chhod chalen yah lok tabhi, Lokaant viraajen kshan men jaa.
Nij lok hamaara vaasa ho, Shokaant banen phir hamko kya.

Jaage mum durlabh bodhi prabho, Durnaytam satvar tal jaave.
Bas gyaata drishta rah jaaoun, Mad matsar moh vinash jaave.

Chir rakshak dharma hamaara ho, Ho dharma hamaara chir saathi.
Jag men na hamaara koi thaa, Hum bhi na rahen jag ke saathi.

Charanon men aaya hoon prabhuvar, Sheetaltaa mujhako mil jaave.
Murjhaai gyanlataa meri, Nij antarbal se khil jaave.

Socha kartaa hoon bhogon se, Bujh jaavegi ichchhaa jwaala.
Parinaam nikaltaa hai lekin, Maano paavak men ghee daala.

Tere charanon ki pooja se, Indriya sukh ko hi abhilaasha.
Aba tak na samajh hi paaya prabhu, Sachche such ki bhee paribhaasha.

Tum to avikaari ho prabhuvar, Jag men rahte jag se nyaare.
Ataeve jhuke tav charanon men, Jag ke maanik moti saare.

Syadvaad mayee teri vaani, Shubh naya ke jharne jharte hain.
Ous paavan naokaa per laakhon, Praani bhav vaaridhi tirte hain.

Hei guruvar shashvat sukh darshak, Yah nagna swaroop tumhaara hai.
Jag ki nashvartaa kaa sachchaa, Digdarshan karne vaala hai.

Jab jag vishayon men rach pach kar, Gaafil nidraa men sotaa ho.
Athavaa vah shiv ke nishkantak, Path men vishkantak botaa ho.

Ho ardh nishaa ka sannaata, Van men vanchaari charte hon.
Tab shaant niraakul maanas tum, Tattvon ka chintan karte ho.

Karte tapa shail nadee tat par, Tarutal varshaa ki jhadiyon men.
Samtaa ras paan kiyaa karte, Sukh dukh donon ki ghadiyon men.

Antarjwaala hartee vaani, Maanon jhartee hon phuljhadiyan.
Bhav bandhan tad tad toot paden, Khil jaaven antar ki kaliyan.

Tum saa daani kyaa koi ho, Jag ko de dee jag ki nidhiyaan.
Din raat lutaaya karte ho, Sam sham ki avinashver maniyaan.

Om Hrim Shri Dev Shastra Gurubhyo Anarghya Pad Praaptaye Mahaarghyam Nirvapameeti Swaaha.

Hey nirmal dev tumhen pranaam, Hey gyandeep aagam pranaam.
Hey shaanti tyaag ke moortimaan, Shiv path panthi guruver pranaam.

Circle Of Karma

In Samaysaar Aacharya Kundkund mentioned that there are seven kinds of fear. We see that the seven fears are as follows:-

1. Fear of failure in the life
2. Fear of the next life
3. Fear of disease
4. Fear of insecurity
5. Fear of loss of secrecy
6. Fear of death
7. Fear of all of a sudden loss

Jain Philosophy explains that fear is due to illusion or ignorance is due to karma based on previous and present thoughts and actions. Modern psychologists go to the extent that even an old person can experience fear due to his/her early childhood impressions and DNA inherited.

By true nature, a soul is fearless. The amount of fear present in our life indicates our degree of unhappiness.
To have protection against fear many living beings follow sinful methods. Modern psychologists explain that anger, greed, violence, etc. Arise due to fear; Spiritual teachers suggest alternative methods to get rid of fear. But a large number of living beings fail to understand the importance of spiritual teachings. If you ask such a person to devote sometime to spiritual teachings then it is likely that he/she responds with words such as: ‘I do not have time for learning the spiritual teachings. I need time to earn money, I need time to support my family and Maintain my job….’.Thus in effect his/her basic reason for not devoting time to the spirituality is the fear of insecurity. But see the paradox, when the same person quarrels with his/her parents or children or spouse or friend then he/she has enough time! If you suggest, ‘Minimize your arguments and quarrel by forgiving to certain extent’-then it is likely that he/she may respond with words such as: If I start forgiving then, they would not care for me. If I do not show this person his/her mistakes then she/he would repeat it again’. Here again the basis of such quarrel is fear of his/her failure in the life.In such cases the main ignorance is, perhaps, too much attachment with small and small matters and too much concern for the safety. The behavior of the same person would be different if he knows and trusts that the time spent in the spiritual growth can save his/her time by way of reducing quarrels, sickness, poor sleep and bad luck.

Because of the fear of failure in the life a person is so much conscious of his/her success that he/she always wants to validate or prove that he/she is great, his/her family is great. We all know what happens when we want to prove ourselves great. We soon see or hear that other person has a better car or a better houre or more influential friends or more educated children and so on.The spiritual teachings at this stage help by bringing a person to such a level that he/she does not have to spend of his/her time and energy in proving that he/she is not less than anybody else.
The point is simple: many living beings under the influence of direct or indirect fear follow the path of hatred, jealousy, anger, greed and disrespect for spiritual values such that again new bondage of karma takes place. The fear itself leads the bondage with Asata Vedniya Karma. The disrespect for the spiritual truth leads to the bondage with Gyanavaraniya and Darshanavaraniya Karma. The jealousy, hatred, etc. lead to the bondage with antaray Karma. Thus this cycle of Karma, ignorance, fear , sin , and karma runs and runs.

How to break this cycle

In Chhahadhala Pandit Daulat Ramji has answered this question by prescribing the following remedy:

 तातैं जिनवर कथित तत्त्व अभ्यास करीजे

The central idea of this prescription is: Learn and practice the spiritual teachings in terms of seven Tatva narrated by Jinendra Dev. Aacharya Amrit Chandra in Samaysaar Kalash gives following ‘principle’ to practice:

सिद्धान्तोयामुदात्त चित्त चरितैः मोक्शार्थिभिः सेव्यतां,
शुद्धं चिन्मय मेकमेव परम ज्योतिः सदेवाराम्यहम
एते ये तू समुल्लासंती विविधा भावाः प्रृथग्लक्षणा
स्तेहं नास्मि यातोअम तो मं पर द्रव्यं समग्रा अपि

The message conveyed in the aove verse is as follows:Practice the realization of this principle that you are soul, you are Chaitanya, paramjyoti, you are always the same one soul, you are pure soul; that fear, loss/gain, disease and all such temporary attributes produced by karma are different and separate from the soul. These are not you. The characteristics of the soul are different from the characterstics of the soul are different from the characteristics of these. How the spiritual solution works: Many problems are magnified because, of our wrong interpretation. Many problems become worse by following wrong sinful paths. A good understanding of the karmic laws produces such a perception that others appear to bring loss/gain to us just as a postman brings mail. Further, the practice of realizing oneself as a soul who simply knows and observes as a witness makes fearful events less fearful. This witness aspect creates such a vision that rings a problem to an unmagnified level. Additionally, according to the karmic laws the good thoughts associated with un-attachment with the results bring positive coincidences or good luck in our life. The witness aspect also leads to the release from bonded karma. Just as a small candle eliminates the darkness of centuries, our bondage of karma of centuries can be broken by the true realization of the spiritual powers and the universal orderliness through karmic laws. Keeping such spiritual powers in mind Aacharya Maantung in Bhaktamar Stotra’s metre-7 writes:”O God! By your prayer the bondage of sins of many past lives get detached instantly”

तुम जस जंपत जन छीन माही,
जनम जनम के पापनशाही
जवा रवि उगै फटे तत्काल,
अलिवत नील निशा-तम जाल..

Aacharya Kundkund in Samaysaar gatha-186 gives the logic of liberation from the bondage of karma as follows: The logic expressed in the above verse is very profound. It emphatically says that if you realize soul and karma as different and have a perception that you as a soul are not attached with the karma and fruition of the karma then eventually the karma get detached from the soul forever. The negative effects of anger and many other sins have also been investigated by a large number of researchers. The positive effects of meditation and prayer on he health have also been scientifically recorded by various groups. All these provide strong support o the spiritual power or power f paap and punya. In modern era for many psychological problems psychologists investigate the history of the patient and try to find the origin of the problem. They try to know the wrong notion (such as fear) responsible for the problem. They also investigate at which point of time in the life such wrong notion has been acquired. They even go to early childhood events and the family environment. They have this concept that a person can be released from the psychological problem more easily if the patient recognizes its origin. Somewhere in the whole process they want the patient to be conscious of the origin of the problem-a kind of witness attitude- a kind of perception of separation of oneself from the problem. In broader sense the living beings have acquired fear etc. in this present life and many past lives. This acquisition is stored in the form of karma. To get detached we need to have the perception that our soul is different and separate from karma and fruits of the karma, or we need to realize ourselves as observers or knower of all that is happening.
